The first examples of cameos arrive to us through the greek and roman civilizations.
They were faces and figures on semi-precious stone and they were also considered as men’s ornaments.
For centuries the kind of materials used and the figures engraved have always been the same but only during the Renaissance the classical waves were very near artists of that time so they started to get closer to cameos.
The engraving got better and better and they started to rappresent mythological features, always carving on semi-precious stones.
Only during the 18th century this kind of work started in Torre del Greco but instead of engraving on different kind of stones they started engraving on shells.
